A Tragic Allentown Story

Allentown is home to the amusement park Dorney Park and the Wildwater Kingdom. In 1994, tragedy struck when a 14-year-old boy drowned in the wave pool. A wrongful death suit was filed against the park as well as the school, and in the end, the jury found Dorney Park 41 percent responsible for having to pay the boy’s family $4,100,000. It was reported that the boy was known to be a poor swimmer and that this was expressed to lifeguards by friends when it was discovered that he was missing.

The Morning Call, a Lehigh Valley newspaper, reported that the boy drowned at approximately 3:30 p.m. but they did not find his body until after 1 a.m. the next morning. The story went on to report that he was not found despite the pool being initially scanned by three lifeguards, 90 lifeguards who participated in a relay race in that very pool while he lay beneath them in the water, and police and other park officials searching the pool. The wave pool was reported to be 39,000 square feet with a million gallons of water. The boy was discovered in a section of the pool that was 10-feet-deep by a welder who was taking a break from fixing a different ride.

The school that he attended was also found to be at fault (59 percent responsible), as he was on a school trip. It was reported that after only a short search for the missing boy everyone with the school trip left and went back home to the Bronx.
