The Mummers Parade

Mummers are usually the first parade of the year as it happens on the first of January. This festival is borrowed from Egyptian and Greek traditions which were all about satire and mockery. It is the single biggest costume parade in Philadelphia. Participants march through Broad Street in their flamboyant costumes and exaggerated makeup and accessories. The performances are then judged at a fancy brigade finale which is held at the Pennsylvania convention center.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the New Year, according to the Chinese calendar. This event falls in February most of the time. Philadelphia’s Chinatown is known to go all out when celebrating their new year.
