As a result of the breach, the names, CFCU account numbers, and Social Security numbers of certain individuals were compromised. The CFCU data breach is believed to have impacted as many as 5,592 account holders. On May 4, 2022, Circle Federal Credit Union sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.

What We Know About the Circle Federal Credit Union Data Breach

According to an official filed by the company on May 4, 2022, Circle Federal Credit Union learned the company was the target of a cybersecurity attack on February 16, 2022. In response, CFCU launched an investigation to learn more about the nature and scope of the incident. On March 7, 2022, CFCU confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to gain access to one of the company’s email accounts. As a result, the unauthorized party had access to sensitive files located on the CFCU network between January 27, 2022 and January 28, 2022.

Upon learning of the unauthorized access, CFCU then sought to identify whether any parties’ personal or financial information was contained in the affected files accessible through the compromised email account. While the breached information varies based on the individual, it may include your first and last name, mailing address, account numbers with CFCU, and Social Security number.

On May 4, 2022, CFCU issued data breach letters to those whose information was compromised in the breach and what steps they can take to protect themselves from identity theft and other frauds.
