Mary E. Reves, 70, of Plainfield, suffered major injuries in a New Jersey car accident after the vehicle in which she was a passenger collided with another car. According to a news report in My Central Jersey, the injury collision occurred the afternoon of February 16, 2012. Vitoria Reves Guy, 58, was driving her 2007 Cadillac south on the Clinton Avenue Extension, County Road 605, when it was struck by a 2006 Ford F-350 owned by Conrail. The truck, which was operated by Conrail employee, Jeffrey A Campbell, 59, was westbound on the railroad tracks.

Campbell told police that he applied the brakes, but couldn’t stop the truck because of wet rails. The truck entered the roadway and struck the Cadillac. Mary Reves sustained serious injuries to her head and pelvic-leg area. She was taken to a local hospital. The railroad grade crossing at the location of the crash has flashing lights, audible bells and gates, but none of that was activated at the time. Charges against Campbell are pending. The investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the seriously injured Mary E. Reves. I wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

What Caused This Collision?

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Conrail truck lost control of his vehicle and struck the Cadillac carrying the victim. There are several questions here. Was there some type of malfunction in the truck or the rails? Was it due to poor maintenance? Was the accident caused by driver error or negligence? Why were the flashing lights and bells not activated at the railroad crossing to alert motorists about the oncoming vehicle? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Fault and Liability

If this accident occurred due to the driver’s negligence or Conrail’s negligence, then the victim can seek compensation for her injuries and losses from the at-fault or negligent parties. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced New Jersey personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
