Data Breach AlertMay 19 – Luxottica Group S.p.A. (“Luxottica”) acknowledged on May 19, 2023, that a data breach of a vendor’s computer network occurred in 2021, exposing the confidential information of as many as 70 million individuals. Third-party sources indicate that the breach exposed the names, birth dates, addresses, and email addresses of consumers to a third party. When it became clear that consumer information had been compromised, Luxottica immediately started sending out data breach notification letter those who had been affected. What’s especially alarming to consumers is that the compromised information was recently made available for free on a number of well-known hacker sites.

Data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C. are conducting an investigation into the Luxottica data breach on behalf of individuals whose personal information has been compromised. As part of this investigation, we are offering free consultations to anyone whose personal information was exposed by the data breach.

Information About the Luxottica Group Breach

Although details of the Luxottica data breach are still emerging, what is known so far is that the issue is related to a data breach that occurred at one of the company’s suppliers in 2021. The data breach was discovered towards the end of 2022 when a member of a now-defunct ransomware group advertised for sale a database that it claimed held 300 million records of Luxottica clients in the US and Canada.

Luxottica Group began reviewing the affected files and discovered that confidential consumer information was made accessible to an unauthorized individual(s). Your name, date of birth, address, and email address might have been compromised, albeit the specific information compromised will vary from person to person.

The information was then made freely available on several hacker forums between April 30 and May 12, 2023. According to a data analyst, there are 305 million records in the database, including 74.4 million unique email addresses. The investigator speculates that the information was stolen by hackers on March 16, 2021. Also, Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) founder Troy Hunt has revealed that a total of 77,093,812 accounts were compromised in the incident. He will be sending data breach notifications to over 320,000 individuals.

While the investigation continues, Luxottica Group has started delivering its own data breach notifications to those people whose data was exposed in the 2021 incident.
