According to the Attorney General of Vermont, the Alexion Pharmaceuticals data breach was reported after they were affected by a recent cyber security attack at Cisiv, Ltd. On February 8, 2024, the company learned that an unauthorized party was able to gain access to a database Alexion used to support its Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (“REMS”) Program. Cisiv, Alexion’s vendor that was breached, acted as a subcontractor to another vendor, PPD, that Alexion had engaged to handle the REMS database. Cisiv first learned about the incident on February 12, 2024, prompting the company to secure its systems and launch an investigation. It was confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access the REMS database, which contained sensitive participant information. On May 14, 2024, Alexion Pharmaceuticals sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
