Data Breach AlertJune 27 – The California State Teachers Retirement System (“CalSTRS”) data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company was affected by a recent third party cybersecurity attack at PBI Research Services. The CalSTRS data breach resulted in the names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and zip codes of certain individuals being compromised. At this time, it is unclear how many individuals were affected by the breach.

What Happened As A Result Of The CalSTRS Data Breach?

According to a notice posted on the company’s website, California State Teachers Retirement System reported a data breach after they were affected by a recent cyber security attack at PBI Research Services. PBI is a third party vendor CalSTRS used to ensure that payments are not sent after a member has passed away. CalSTRS and PBI used the MOVEit file transfer software developed by Progress Software to transmit files containing member information. The software contained a vulnerability that hackers were able to exploit, allowing the unauthorized party to gain access to the information sent between the companies. The data breach did not involve California State Teachers Retirement System computer network. On June 26, 2023, California State Teachers Retirement System sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
