November 21 – The Global Tel*Link Corp., doing business under the name ViaPath Technologies, data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach after the company settled a case brought by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) based on their failure to protect confidential consumer data. The ViaPath Technologies data breach resulted in the full names, Social Security numbers, financial account information, dates of birth, phone numbers, usernames or email addresses in combination with passwords, home addresses, driver’s license numbers and passport numbers of certain individuals being compromised. It is believed to have impacted as many as 45,000 individuals.
According to a notice posted on the company’s website, ViaPath Technologies reported a data breach after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. In mid-2020, ViaPath was testing a new software product, and copied a database containing entries on 650,000 real users to a test environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The data sitting in the test environment was not password-protected for approximately two days. ViaPath was then contacted by a security researcher who informed the company that the database was unprotected but at that point, the files soon had already showed up on a dark web forum. As a result, 
certain consumers experienced fraudulent charges on their credit cards. The company received backlash for taking almost 9 months to notify the 45,000 victims who were affected by the breach.
