November 16 – The Westat data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company was targeted in a recent cyber security attack. The Westat data breach resulted in the names, Social Security numbers, and protected health information of certain individuals being compromised. The total number of people affected may be approximately 70,000, based on two filings with the HHS-OCR on October 13, 2023 and November 3, 2023.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, Westat reported a data breach after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. Westat uses the MOVEit secure file-transfer software created by Progress Software. Earlier this year, Progress Software announced a zero-day vulnerability. On May 30, 2023, Westat identified unusual activity within its MOVEit server. The company launched an investigation and confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed files containing confidential consumer information between May 28, 2023 and May 29, 2023. Westat sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
