January 23 – The data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the Dawson James Securities, Inc. (“Dawson James”) data breach that was reported after the company was targeted in a recent cyber security attack. The number of victims and type of data stolen is not public information, but past data breaches involving Dawson James have included thousands of victims losing their Social Security numbers.
According to Dawson James’ filing with the Attorney General of Montana, the company suffered a cyber attack from June 29th to June 30th, 2023. The company detected the breach, secured its network, and began a data breach investigation that lasted more than five months. By December 8th, the investigation reached its conclusion and found that an unauthorized actor had stolen sensitive consumer data.
On January 19th, Dawson James sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach. This letter did not indicate how many people were affected, or the type of data leaked.
However, it did include offers of identity protection services and recommended that affected individuals freeze their credit. It’s unclear if this is a standard practice or evidence that the hackers stolen Social Security numbers, which was the case in a 2021 data breach impacting Dawson James.
