July 30 – The National Student Clearinghouse data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company was affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. The National Student Clearinghouse data breach may have resulted in the names and Social Security numbers of certain students being compromised.
According to a notice posted on their website, National Student Clearinghouse reported a data breach after they were affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. NSC uses the MOVEit third-party software tool to securely transfer files, some of which contain confidential student information provided by various colleges and universities across the country. Earlier this year, Progress Software announced a vulnerability within MOVEit, potentially affecting thousands of organizations worldwide where an unauthorized party discovered the MOVEit vulnerability, allowing them to access files being transferred using the tool.
After learning about the MOVEit vulnerability, NSC launched an investigation and confirmed that an unauthorized party obtained certain files transferred through NSC’s MOVEit environment. Some of these files were later determined to contain sensitive information that had been provided to NSC by colleges and universities. National Student Clearinghouse sent out data breach letters to those schools that were affected by the recent data security incident.
