July 22 – The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (“TIAA”) and the National Student Clearinghouse (“NSC”) data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company was affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association and the National Student Clearinghouse data breach resulted in the sensitive information of certain individuals being compromised.
Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association and the National Student Clearinghouse reported a data breach after they were affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. On May 31, 2023, Progress Software announced a zero-day vulnerability within MOVEit file transfer software that allowed hackers to access information stored on various organizations’ MOVEit servers, including NSC’s.
While TIAA did not use the MOVEit software, the organization provided confidential faculty information to one of its vendors, Pension Benefit Information (“PBI”), which used MOVEit to transfer that data. In other words, TIAA is a vendor used by colleges and universities, and PBI is a vendor used by TIAA.
Investigations were launched and confirmed that an unauthorized party obtained certain files transferred through their respective MOVEit environments, including files containing data that the organizations maintain on behalf of certain universities. The following universities were recently notified by NSC and TIAA that their students’ data was among that which was compromised:
SUNY Freedonia, and
Once the National Student Clearinghouse and Pension Benefit Information complete their investigations, they will send out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
