August 17 – The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (“UMass Chan”) data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company was affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School data breach resulted in the names, Social Security numbers and financial account information of certain individuals being compromised. It is believed to have impacted as many as 134,000 individuals.
According to a notice posted on their website, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School reported a data breach after they were affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at Progress Software. UMass Chan provides services to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (“EOHHS”) and uses the MOVEit file transfer software to transfer files to certain EOHHS agencies and programs. While the UMass Chan notice doesn’t mention the cause of the incident, back in May 2023, Progress Software discovered a critical vulnerability within MOVEit that allowed unauthorized parties to access information stored on certain MOVEit servers. On August 15, 2023, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
