What Happened As A Result Of The University of Minnesota Data Breach?

According to news articles on MPR News and Kare11, the University of Minnesota reported a data breach after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. Last month, the university was made aware of a potential data security incident when a hacker claimed to have obtained seven million unique Social Security numbers from the University of Minnesota system. As soon as U of M learned about the potential breach, it launched an investigation to confirm the hackers’ reports. The investigation is ongoing, a spokesperson stated that the university’s preliminary findings suggest the data that may be compromised dates back to 2021 and earlier. This seemingly corroborates the hackers’ claim that the leaked data spans all the way back to 1989.
