June 20 – The University of Toledo Medical Center (“UTMC”) data breach is being investigated by the data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C. The data breach was reported after the company was affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at IntelliHartx, LLC (“ITx”), a healthcare debt collection company. It is still unclear what data types were affected by the University of Toledo Medical Center data breach and how many individuals were impacted.
According to UTMC representatives who spoke with various news outlets, University of Toledo Medical Center reported a data breach after they were affected by a recent third party cyber security attack at IntelliHartx. Sometime in April 2023, IntelliHartx informed UTMC that certain UTMC patient data was among those which was exposed as a result of the IntelliHartx/Fortra data breach. On February 2, 2023, IntelliHartx learned that Fortra had experienced a data security incident which stemmed from a zero-day vulnerability in its GoAnywhere managed file transfer product.
ITx launched an investigation to and reviewed all the compromised data that was provided to ITx by Fortra. The ITx investigation confirmed that the Fortra breach resulted in confidential ITx customer information (and their patients) being compromised. The University of Toledo Medical Center is still investigating the data breach and will send out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
