April 3 – The data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C. are investigating the United Network for Organ Sharing (“UNOS”) data breach that was reported after the company was targeted in a recent cyber security attack. It is believed to have impacted as many as 1.5 million individuals. The UNOS data breach resulted in the below information of certain individuals being compromised:

  • Social Security numbers,
  • dates of birth
  • and medical information

What Happened?

The UNOS data breach was reported after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. On December 14, 2023, the company posted a notice on its website indicating that the company was “investigating a configuration error that may have permitted access by authorized users to some patients’ personal health information stored within two UNOS IT environments.” It was confirmed that certain patient information was available to others in the organ transplant community. UNOS explained that sensitive information was not kept secure, which exposed the data to unauthorized access. UNOS will need to send out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.

About UNOS

Based in Richmond, Virginia, the United Network for Organ Sharing is a private, non-profit organization and the sole government Data Breach Alertcontractor that manages the nation’s organ transplant system. Part of UNOS’ responsibilities include managing the national transplant waiting list.
