1. Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky

Chomsky is considered the father of linguistics and the founder of cognitive science. He was born in Philadelphia and got educated at the University of Philadelphia. Chomsky is also considered a political commentator, social justice activist, logician, and anarcho-syndicalist advocate. He played a major role in analytical philosophy.

 

 

2. Boyz II Men

Boyz Ii Men

This legendary group that sings R&B ruled various charts in the 90s with several hit songs. Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Nathan Morris are all natives of Philly and they attended the Philadelphia High School. This group even has a street named after them called the Boyz II Men Boulevard in Philadelphia.

 

 

3. Kevin Bacon

He was born and raised in Philadelphia. Bacon’s father was on the planning commission of the city for several years.

This acclaimed comedian, writer, actress, and producer comes from Upper Darby – a town just outside of Philadelphia. She is best known for creating and appearing in hit shows such as ’30 Rock’ and more recently, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.’

The Roots

It is impossible to think about Philadelphia without thinking of this legendary hip hop band. Founded by Ahmir Questlove’ Thompson and Tariq lack Though’ Trotter in 1987 at CAPA, since 2014 this group has been the house band for the Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon. Before that, they were the house band of NBC’s late-night show. They returned too Philly for the 10th annual Roots Picnic on June 2.

 

6. Kobe Bryant

This American professional basketball player that played his 20-year career with the LA Lakers of the NBA was born and raised in Philadelphia, being the youngest of three children of former NBA player, Pamela Cox Bryant and Joe Bryant. He began his NBA career directly from high school and has won five NBA championships during this time.

This American actress was born in 1986 as Katherine Litwack, she is professionally known as Kat Dennings. After her first acting debut in the series ex and the City,’ she has since featured in various movies including Big Momma’s House 2, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The House Bunny, Defender, Thor, and many more.

 

 

 

8. Eve

Eve

This American hip hop artist and actress hail from Philadelphia. She is has won the inaugural Grammy Award for the Best Rap Collaboration for her song Let me blow ya mind’ in 2002. This artist was number 48 on the list of the ’50 Greatest Women of the Video Era.’ She has played roles as an actress in the movies Barbershop and Barbershop 2.

 

 

 

9. Grace Kelly

This American actress was born in Philadelphia and was raised in East Falls section of the town, where her family house is still standing. She would go on to become the Princess of Monaco. She is famous for her roles in movies such as Dial M for Murder’ and Rear Window.’ She ended her acting career after getting married to the Prince of Monaco.

 

 

 

10. Will Smith

Speaking about royalties from Philly, the whole world first fell in love with the native of West Philadelphia, Will Smith in his iconic TV series, he Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ Later on, he followed that up with an astonishing career on the big screen, which saw him appear in popular movies such as en in Black,’ he Pursuit of Happiness,’ itch’ and many more.
