May 3, 2022 – Recently, Riviera Utilities reported a data breach after an unauthorized party was able to gain access to sensitive consumer information through employees’ compromised email accounts. As a result of the breach, the names, Social Security numbers, and credit and debit card information of certain individuals were compromised. On April 26, 2022, Riviera Utilities sent out data breach letters to those whose information was affected by the breach.

According to an official filed by the company, Riviera Utilities recently learned of a data security incident affecting its computer system. Evidently, on an undisclosed date, the company discovered that an unauthorized party had gained access to certain employee email accounts. Upon discovery of the incident, Riviera Utilities secured its computer systems and launched an investigation to learn more about the nature and scope of the incident. However, Riviera Utilities did not mention how the unauthorized party was able to access the compromised email accounts.
On March 28, 2022, Riviera Utilities confirmed that on or about October 17, 2021, an unauthorized party was able to access and potentially remove sensitive files from the Riviera Utilities network through the affected email accounts. It remains unclear if the unauthorized access was limited only to October 17, 2021, or if it continued until the discovery of the incident.
Riviera Utilities then sought to identify whether any parties’ sensitive information was contained in the affected files. Upon completing its review of the compromised files, the company announced that the breached information may include affected parties’ names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state identification numbers, passport numbers, medical information, health insurance information, credit or debit card numbers, card expiration dates and card CVVs.
