April 29, 2022 – Recently, Summit Eye Associates, P.C. (“Summit”) reported a possible data breach resulting from a data security incident that occurred at Eye Care Leaders, a third-party company that facilitates the maintenance of Summit’s patients’ medical records. As a result of the breach, the names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers of certain individuals may have been compromised. On April 27, 2022, Summit Eye Associates began sending out data breach letters to those Summit patients whose information was potentially exposed as a result of the Eye Care Leaders breach.

News of the Summit data breach is still recent; however, the company provided some useful details about the breach in a recent letter. Evidently, on March 1, 2022, Eye Care Leaders reached out to Summit to notify the company that it had experienced a data security incident around December 4, 2021. Around that time, an unauthorized party accessed the Eye Care Leaders platform and deleted database information and system configuration files.
In response to the incident, Eye Care Leaders then engaged in an investigation to learn more about its nature and scope, as well as whether any consumer information was leaked as a result. On March 28, 2022, Eye Care Leaders again contacted Summit, explaining that the company had not yet confirmed whether any Summit patient information was compromised. However, because Summit Eye Associates cannot rule out the possibility that certain patient data was compromised, on April 27, 2022, the company sent out data breach notification letters.
Based on the information Summit had provided to Eye Care Leaders, Summit warns that the potentially compromised information may include patients’ names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health insurance information, Social Security numbers, and information regarding care received at Summit Eye Associates.
On April 27, 2022, Summit Eye Associates, P.C. issued data breach letters to anyone whose information may have been leaked as a result of the breach at Eye Care Leaders.
Summit Eye Associates, P.C. is an ophthalmology clinic based in Hermitage, Tennessee. The practice group provides a range of ophthalmological services, including routine eye exams, cataract surgery, glaucoma management, and diabetes eye care. Summit also performs aesthetic procedures, such as Botox injections. Summit Eye Associates employs 38 people and generates approximately $7 million in annual revenue.
