More About the Shutterfly Breach

What we know about the Shutterfly data breach comes primarily from the data breach letter sent by the company, as well as Shutterfly’s official filings with various state governments. Evidently, on December 13, 2021, the company first learned that it had been the target of a ransomware attack about ten days earlier, on around December 3, 2021. Upon learning of the attack, Shutterfly arranged to have a team of cybersecurity experts investigate the incident. This investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access sensitive employee data stored on the company’s servers.

Shutterfly then engaged in a detailed review of all of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party.  After completing this review, Shutterfly confirmed that certain employee data was compromised, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, government-issued identification numbers, financial information, medical information and healthcare information. At first, Shutterfly believed that approximately 1,400 employees were impacted by the breach. The company sent out initial data breach letters to these parties on March 22, 2022.

However, more recently, it appears as though the company identified additional victims. On May 29, 2022, Shutterfly sent data breach letters to additional employees who were affected by the recent data security incident.
