Data Breach AlertFebruary 25, 2023 – Emtec, Inc. filed notice of a data breach on February 21, 2023 with attorney general’s offices of several states, like Texas and Maine, after discovering that an unauthorized party had gained access to consumer information. According to the filings, an unauthorized party gained access to consumer information, including names, Social Security numbers, addresses, financial account information, driver’s license numbers, and protected health information. After confirming the data leak, Emtec sent out data breach notification letters to all 7,637 individuals affected.

What We Know About the Emtec Data Breach

Information provided by Emtec’s filings with the attorney general’s offices of Texas and Maine. According to the filings, Emtec discovered a that an unauthorized third party gained access to confidential consumer files. Information about how the cyberattack happened is limited. The company began working with a third-party forensic specialists to investigate the breach and determine if any information had been leaked.

The investigation concluded on January 17, 2023, and it was determined that hackers gained access to the system from September 7, 2022 to September 14, 2022. After learning that the consumer data was exposed to a third party, Emtec reviewed the files to determine what information was leaked. While not consistent with each individual, information leaked may include consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses, financial account information, driver’s license numbers, and protected health information.

On December 30, 2022, Emtec, Inc. sent out letters to all individuals whose sensitive information had been compromised.

What Happened

Emtec, Inc. (“Emtec”) recently became aware of a [Redacted]. We are reviewing this incident and have determined that certain data files were accessible to unauthorized third parties for a period of time. We subsequently performed an assessment of these data files and determined, on January 17, 2023 that some of the files contained certain personal information at the time that the unauthorized third party had access to them. After becoming aware of the incident, Emtec undertook a review, working with third party experts and law enforcement, to determine the nature and scope of the unauthorized access and ensure it was contained.
